Buying a Loft in Printers Row

Printers Row ChicagoPrinter’s Row has grown in popularity in recent years as a charming and tightly-woven yet artsy neighborhood. Even though it’s a fairly new residential area, it has a rich history going back to the late 19th Century when it was the heart of Chicago’s printing and publishing industry.

All over Printer’s Row, you can find remnants of the printing businesses that used to be housed in many of the warehouses that are now luxury lofts. Some of the buildings are still called by their original publishing house names and you can also spot some of the original signage.

True to its history, Printer’s Row hosts an annual book fair every June with guest speakers consisting of various authors and poets. Here, almost any book in any edition—hardcover and paperback—can be found. Aside from the artsy allure of the literary fair, right around the corner from Printer’s Row are Chicago’s Fine Arts colleges including Columbia College and Roosevelt University, both of which put on plays, shows and exhibits throughout the year.

There is no meager dining life in Printer’s Row. There are a variety of restaurants to choose from including several family-owned restaurants that have been around for decades.Printers Row Loft

On restaurant of this character is Hackney’s, where you can get a mountain of their famous crispy French fried onions to start and a half-pound feta lamb burger as your main course. Hackney’s has been run by the same family for nearly 70 years, according to their website.

Another wonderful family-owned restaurant in Printer’s Row is Blackie’s, where you can order burgers, pork belly sliders, ribeye and truffle mac and cheese. The restaurant has been around since 1939 and the DeMilio Family has been running it for five generations, according to their website.

Living in a loft is a wonderful option if you love the lure of Printer’s Row. Lofts, large condos often converted from warehouses, are in demand in the heart of a large city where many of the properties available are smaller condos and apartments. Loft condos are popular because of their bohemian-style exposed brick walls and the large amount of open space they afford their residents.
