Chicago’s 18th annual Christkindlemarket is lighting up the Loop
If you’re looking for a gift for the person who has everything, the one annual holiday event in Chicago’s Loop that you don’t want to miss is Christkindlemarket!
Inspired by the Christkindlesmarkt in Nuremberg, this free, outdoor German event lights up Daley Plaza with dozens of mini cottages filled with vendors selling unique gifts from around the world like eclectic, hand-blown, painted ornaments; classic German products like nutcrackers, cuckoo clocks, and beer steins; toys for all ages; and even jewelry, clothes, home décor and wooden handicrafts. On top of that, some vendors hold demonstrations on how their creations were made. For example, a wood carver might demonstrate his unique carving techniques, and visitors can buy his creations directly from the workbench.
During this event, aromas from sausages, sauerkraut, potato pancakes, waffles, drinks, candied treats and many other German delicacies engulf the plaza.
Tradition at the market is the Gluehwein, a German hot spiced wine that comes in a souvenir cup shaped like a boot, decorated with the market’s signature logo and year.
Chicago’s largest open-air Christmas festival was first held on Pioneer Court in 1996, according to christkindlmarket.com. By special invitation of Mayor Richard M. Daley, Christkindlmarket Chicago moved to Daley Plaza in 1997 and has become a staple event on the plaza ever since. Together with the support of the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events, the market has grown to become one of the most popular winter attractions in Chicago.
