For all of you food connoisseurs out there, a new foodie-worthy restaurant has opened its doors this year in the West Loop, and it’s bringing in people from all over the city! Located on 802 Randolph Street, OON serves contemporary American cuisine infused with Southeast Asian fare, as well as a dedicated selection of beer and cocktails.
The restaurant was launched in July by Matt Eversman, a Crystal Lake native. OON, which stands for “Out of Nowhere,” features a modest menu with a solid core of creative dishes.
“We’re borrowing from all different cultures—Thai, Vietnamese, Filipino, Malaysian, Burmese, and Cambodian,” Matt Eversman told Michigan Avenue magazine.
Their menu is only one page long and is separated into three categories: vegetables, seafood and meat, which makes it easy to choose your dish! Some of the items include the Green Papaya Salad; Chilled Udon with exotic ingredients like peekytoe crab, shiitake mushroom and yuzu-soy dashi; and the Kalbi Shortrib with maggi, mango chutney, radish, daikon and cilantro.
Chef Matt Eversman writes on OON’s website that one of the most important things about opening OON Chicago has not been only the food and drink, but picking the best possible location.
“I picked the West Loop area because I want us to be where Chicago’s serious diners go to find really different and exciting approaches to food,” he writes. “Frankly, I’m honored to be neighbors with some of the best chefs in the city, if not the country.”
Oon gets 4 out of 5 stars on Yelp, with some raving reviews about the service, the food and the classy ambiance.
“I am frequently asked why am I so passionate about what I do and what on Earth was I thinking when I decided to open a restaurant,” Eversman writes. “My answer is this, a huge part of the satisfaction I get from my work is to be a part of peoples’ lives when they enjoy themselves and are commemorating important moments… and that is really special to me.”
